Digital Marketing and SEO for Startups

As part of the Summit, I’ll be hosting a 45-minute session on how startups need to take advantage of online marketing to get as much visibility in Google as fast as possible. There’s no magic switch when it comes to SEO so the sooner a startup optimizes their website for online search, the better.

If you’re a startup, you surely know that SEO and digital marketing play a crucial role in getting your business off the ground. Yet, most startups don’t fully understand how to develop an effective SEO strategy.

In my session, attendees will learn how any business can develop and implement a sales-generating online marketing strategy that will yield results for years to come. You’ll learn proven and tested strategies that have helped my business and many of our startup customers become profitable in less than six months. SEO is not rocket science, it just takes time, resources, and knowledge.

The 5 Pillars of SEO Methodology

Essentially, SEO is a way to position your business higher in Google and other search engines. SEO is not Pay-Per-Click (aka PPC), which is where you pay Google to place an ad at the top of organic search engine results. Many startups can’t afford to do much in the way of PPC due to the cost and resource constraints, so getting people to their sites organically (naturally) is often a better approach, and that’s where SEO comes in. By implementing a winning strategy, you can rank higher in search engine results, leading to more visibility, customers and sales.

We’ve developed a methodology, called the 5 Pillars of SEO, that we use in all of our digital marketing training classes. We actually teach entire workshops around these concepts, so I’m just going to cover them at a very high level here.

Website Technical Health and Functionality: The First Two Pillars

The first two pillars are about a website’s technical health and functionality. It may sound very basic, but unless you go under your website’s hood and look, there may be problems that you don’t know about which are hurting your organic search engine traffic. For example, your website can be hacked, but you may not know it unless you check.

Google wants you to have success with your search engine results. Websites that provide valuable content, are easy to use and have a consistent, clean design will naturally rank higher. Make sure to read Google’s web design guidelines for additional tips and best practices.

Content Marketing: The Foundation of The Last Three Pillars

The remaining three pillars are all a part of the broader content marketing spectrum. Many of Google’s ranking signals have to do with content. The search giant wants to see valuable, current content on a regular basis. There are many ways to do that: 

  1. On-page SEO – this has to do with any content that you have on your website as well as meta tags optimization. To keep the content on your website fresh, you can apply a content marketing strategy to include generating new content such as blog posts, articles and videos. Doing keyword research is critical to understanding how your audience is searching for things and what content you should develop.
  2. Off-page SEO – this is a way of letting Google know that your website is relevant for your target keywords in places outside of your website. It includes things like getting backlinks from other websites, creating business listings and producing press releases.
  3. Social Media Marketing – it must be a part of your overall SEO strategy. It makes sense to promote your business on the social media platforms where your customers can be found and it can help your ranking since Google incorporates social media sites into their algorithm.

Conclusion and Next Steps

There’s no doubt about it: Getting your website to rank dominantly for your keywords will either take time, resources and knowledge or you outsource it and hire a reputable SEO company.
